CPN Metro District to Help Prevent West Nile Virus

The Metro District will again test standing water in open spaces for mosquito larvae. If there is evidence of mosquitoes, the District will implement environmentally safe tablets designed to destroy the mosquito larvae. The intent is to prevent breeding and the possibility of spreading West Nile virus.

The mosquito season runs from late spring through mid-September, when cooler temperatures arrive. The disease is spread when a mosquito bites an infected bird and becomes a carrier. That infected mosquito can then pass the virus on to livestock, pets, and humans.

Limit time spent outside when mosquitoes are most active, usually dawn and dusk. Spray skin and clothes with an insect repellent containing DEET and make sure to read the label for information pertaining to children. To prevent further breeding make sure to remove standing water from backyard wading pools, bird baths and flower pots.
